PostSubject: The New Regime   Sat Jul 30, 2011 8:32 pm

Following the resignation of Giordano Prideaux, the magical citizens of France had overwhelmingly voted in Etienne Demarchelier as the new Minister of Magic. The young wizard could understand why Prideaux would resign following the attacks on the Russian and English Ministers -- having a wife and children certainly would make any reasonable person fear for their safety. But as Etienne had no family of his own, he had no such scruples. He would consider it an honour to die for his country, and no threat of harm could persuade him to give up his cause.

As a signal of his faith in France, he often travelled alone, without Auror protection or security of any kind. It gave his staff a headache, but it gave the people of his nation hope and security in their brave new leader. Surely nothing bad could happen to them, as it had throughout Europe.

In fact, France was facing problems just like any other country -- but they were going away, slowly but surely. In just the few short months Demarchelier had been in office, the number of siphonings occurring had lowered to nearly half the amount the same time last year. It was an encouraging indication of great good to come, and so Etienne sat with his feet up at his desk, enjoying a glass of the very finest rosé that France had to offer.

A half-finished letter sat beside the wine, addressed to one Liara Lightle. Etienne wished to convey his condolences for her recent attack as well as extend to her an invitation to meet with him in France regarding domestic policy. He was quite eager to show off the results of the French Ministry's new tactics as well as to see whether they could be implemented with similar success in England. A visit with the Russian Minister would follow after he met with Lightle, who he considered to be more likely to be receptive to his ideas.

After all, she had considerable ties to the Muggle world -- that ex-fiancé of hers, for one -- and would probably like to see less attacks going on. That Harper story splashed all over the papers...a very ugly business indeed. It had reached even as far as France, where the general reaction was relief that such things were being better managed by their Minister. Etienne could not help but feel proud -- it was quite an accomplishment so soon after being elected. Honestly, he had expected much more resistance, but it seemed the people of France were ready for a change. As he sipped slowly from his glass, savouring the complex flavour of the wine, he hoped that England was also ready for a change. If he wanted to accomplish his goal of overthrowing the Statute of Secrecy, he would need allies as well as results.

*Later*

Liara was escorted up to Minister Etienne Demarchelier's office, ever since the attack from that bizarre shoting her guards were more intent on seeing to her safety. Though she heard good thing were happeneing in france. Their Minister was loved for the most part, again she envied the minister. She was most certainly looking forward to talking with him, his letter to her had been promising.. She also wished to warn him about Adrain Royale.. the russian minster was not an ally to his peacfully nation of that she was sure of..

As she was visiting, when they reached the door she dismissed her guards, their meeting was to be a privite one after all.. "Go on make your self scarce" she dismissed. The she raised her knuckle and knocked on the door.

"Minister Demarchelier?" sje called seeking enterence.

This time, Etienne's visitor was expected. With a wave of his wand, the door opened, revealing Minister Liara Lightle. He beamed at her, and motioned for her to come sit.

"Welcome! Please, make yourself comfortable," he urged her, gesturing to a very comfortable-looking chair in front of his desk. Rather than sitting behind it, he conjured another chair and sat across from her, hoping to invoke a more friendly, intimate feel to the meeting. Truth be told he'd been quite looking forward to it...every indication had suggested that she would be a useful and powerful ally, as well as pleasant in demeanour and easy on the eyes. Etienne was afraid he couldn't say the same for Adrian Royale.

"Would you like anything to drink? Water, tea, wine?"

Liara smiled "Thank you Minister" she said taking a seat, looking around absently, she like what he had done with the place.

She though for a second at his question, one glass of wine could not hurt, could it? She would like this meeting to go as firendly as possible, she needed a ally.. someone in the same and equal position of power as her on the same side as her. Somehow taking a glass of wine with Etienne seemed to make her effort clear.. in atmosphere anyway.

"Glass of wine would be nice actually, haven;t have French wine in a while" she said with a chuckle.

Etienne looked pleased with her selection, a proud Frenchman at heart.

"But of course! We have the finest rosé, you will love it. Just a little sip, though, we must keep it professional! These wines have undone me one too many time for me to fall for their tricks anymore," he said with a chuckle and a wink, snapping his fingers. A tray appeared behind him at the desk, and he poured two glasses of wine, serving Liara first, of course. He took a sip before she did, an old show of good faith that was a bit outdated, to be honest, but he liked the tradition of it. Etienne didn't really expect anyone to be poisoning his wine.

"So what do you think?" he asked, indicating her glass.

Liara took a sip and smiled " Lovely Minister, thank you" she said holding her glass up to his.

She held the glass on her lap for a moment, "I love what you have done with the place, and I don't just mean you office." she said. She had heard good thing about france, they were coming a good ways and in much better moral then England as much as she hated to admit it. Because of her shooting some few weeks earlier, thing were even more bleack.

"Have to say I am a little envious" she said with a light chuckled

Etienne smiled in response, setting his glass on the desk behind him.

"It hasn't been without its price. There are many who have been angered by my policies, I'm afraid. But we have to deal in facts, not emotions. And the fact is that half-bloods and Muggleborns far outnumber purebloods. When you take into consideration that not all purebloods are against integration, anyway, the answer seems obvious. We must keep pace with the times or be overtaken by them. This isn't the Dark Ages, anymore. Some people appear to require reminding of that fact -- but they're a very small minority." His address was quite to the point, but it was no less than he'd said in dozens of speeches throughout the past two years.

"France will not bow to the demands of a handful of bigoted extremists. We are a forward-thinking, progressive nation, and our policies reflect that. I'm just hoping the rest of the world will catch on soon, and that's where you come in." He leaned in closer and loosened his tie slightly, a tell of his that things were about to get a bit personal.

"Minister, I have heard a great many things about you -- some good, some bad. But the one which concerns me the most is the issue of a certain Hogwarts professor...probably surprising to you, but I do keep up with the gossip columns as well as political news. Nothing is irrelevant in these days, which concerns the fates of the wizarding population. Do tell me if I'm out of line here, but I am not one to 'beat around the bush,' as you say. I believe that, if you love this man, you should marry him. It seems like you only denied yourself as a sacrifice for your country, but that is precisely why I think you should it. If marrying a Muggleborn is a declaration of where you would like to lead England, then marrying him is precisely what you should do. And a happy leader is a better leader, I know that from experience. You don't always have to make yourself miserable for the sake of the job."

Liara had to agree with many of the things he said, though unlike france, even though there were not many pureblood manias.. there were most that were still in power.. and the ones that held her world in their grasp. Someone had to shake them out of power somehow... but the attacks that were occuring were not making that job any easier... people were scared and going to the ones who would offer them protection.

"The balance of power in England is in a delicate state, I may be in power now, but there many after my seat, or my life as you have read most likely. I do believe it will be rectified in the months to come. thought I would rather minimise the bloodshed." she explained. The balance could be upset tomorrow if she wished, but that would mean civil war and the sacrifice of many lives..

However Liara claimed up at the mention of Gage.. Merlin did the whole world know about them? She didn't say anything for a moment, no one was usually this forward with her, not even her own father...

".. I do plan to marry him, one day and he knows that. I cannot be happy married if it means my country is thrown into chaos before it is ready.. it will be soon, all that is need is patiance.." she said, calmly though her heart raced on the inside.

She liked Etienne, and was relieved she might have a sane counter part, however he seemed a bit rash.

"I apologise if I am too forward. I've been told that many times, it is a weakness of mine as well as a strength, I suppose. But at the day's end, I've always felt it better to be as transparent as possible. Once people begin to question how much your word is worth, all is lost. But I'm sure I don't need to tell you that," Etienne reasoned with a shrug.

"As for the matter of England's precarious political situation...is that not what allies are for, if not to come to your aid in times of crisis? I cannot and would not silence those voices of opposition -- to do so would only be an act of war, something to be avoided if at all possible -- but I am in a position to offer you aid. More plainly put, I'd like to make a donation to your campaign -- privately, of course -- but it would be with the understanding that you will, in good time, come to stand with France on this issue. As we both seem to be more or less agreed, I cannot say I see any conflict of interest there?" He leaned back in his chair and observed Liara over his intertwined fingertips, allowing her time to think it over as he calmly awaited her response.

Liara considered his words, they were tempting, a little voice in the back of her head was screaming he was right, perhaps she should stop trying to apease everyone just to stop a war. Maybe a war was what they needed, as much as she loathed to admit it.

"No you are right, your forwardness is a strength in this case, I had alway thought it best to put my country before my self. perhaps it has only made the situation worse..." she said with a sigh. Now that she thought about it England and parts of other nations were laying down to the purists threat. It was now time to fight back and fix the termoil that had somehow cooked it self up.

She blinked at his offer, his support and aid should the worst happen? That was good offer if she ever heard one. Frances polices were something she agreed with as far as she could see, and with an offer like that how could she refuse? It was not like he was in the Reapers plots, or with Adrian..

So she sat up straighter and nodded, "You make generous offer Etienne, I would be foolish to reject your offer of course...England may see many changes in the future, I glad I may have a ally. You have given me alot to think about" she said and that she did..

Etienne smiled at Liara's words, pleased that he hadn't ruined things with his forwardness. For a moment there, he'd been worried he came on too strong, but he was soon reassured by her response. That he'd given her a lot to think about, he didn't doubt. She was an intelligent woman; he was sure that with a bit of time to think it over, she'd realise that he was right.

Appeasement rarely ever worked as a political tactic, as they were both no doubt aware. What point would there be to delay her own happiness to prevent a war that would most likely occur regardless? If anything, making sure she had a soft place to land at home and making sure she didn't let the demands of the job get her down would only help her country, rather than hurt it. His job was done, common sense would do the rest. The only thing left for him to do was to reassure her that she'd made the right choice in accepting his help.

"I appreciate your candour, Ms. Lightle. You can imagine, being rather new to this, that I sometimes have difficulties understanding how these types of things work, so I appreciate your patience with me. I can assure you that you won't regret it -- I'm nothing if not a man of my word." A gentle swish of his wand produced once more his glass, which filled itself as his fingertips touched it.

"I propose a toast. May our enemies be few, and our friends as countless as the stars. Two such nations, united under one cause, cannot fail to succeed."
